Living the EV dream?

The journey has started. My ID.3 has finally arrived and at last I am able to enjoy the pleasure of driving my very own EV. Its some experience, yes the Prius made the transition easy, no gears, instant acceleration and a fantastic straight line speed, all of that you will get in any electric car. So what more should we expect. Well there are definitely challenges. The battery makes the car very heavy in comparison to a normal ICE and of course its the most expensive part of the car so you will of course get less for your money. But that doesn't stop you getting something cutting edge and modern. That's where the ID.3 shines. Its new and yes there are lots of issues right now which is disappointing given the expectations that people have. But it does deliver a fantastic drive, reasonable range (in comparison to an ICE) and of course you are not directly polluting the environment. If you choose your energy supplier carefully you might even be pushing in the right direction. Driving an EV, range becomes a constant concern, not because you have to recharge (everyone has to fill up right) but more so where and when. You really need to have a home charger for sure. That way you are in control of when and how much you pay to recharge. For long trips you need to plan ahead, no more freedom of the open road, now you need to know where to head and plan predetermined stop points along the way to make sure you will make it there and back. That's an entirely new experience. And not one that is underpinned by confidence. Will there be a charger where I'm going, will it be working, will my charging card work, will it charge my car, how long will it take, how much will it cost, will I have enough charge to make it to the next charge point.

Right now, that's to me is the biggest sacrifice to owning an electric car, giving up that freedom. If you are prepared for that, take the plunge and enjoy the simplicity of driving an electric car!
